MR. GREEN TEA IS ICE CREAM

While shopping at Fairway (I love finding new things) I looked into the varieties of ice creams, especially ones that are not full of air.  One brand made me reminiscent of eating at a Japanese restaurant.  Mr. Green Tea struck my attention as the flavors were: green tea, ginger, and red bean.
I am a dessert addicted person…just need for something sweet after a meal.   A spoon of sugar won’t do it and many times, though being a chocoholic, that’s not exactly what I’m craving.  I prefer that perfect Fairytale Brownie as a snack with a glass of milk.   Not being sure which flavor, I bought a pint of each.

What’s inside? Only five ingredients: rbgh free milk and cream; pure cane sugar; hand-picked tea leaves (not green tea powder), imported azuki beans; or fragrant golden ginger.  Well packed and the pint weighed a pound.  Did they even put “air” into it?

I first tasted the ginger with the idea of it being “palate cleansing” and “refreshing”.   Ginger puree and pieces of ginger.  It was sweet but no sugary.  Just enough sugar for the “sweetness”.   Ginger was not as spicy as I anticipated.  That’s good because I wanted the taste of the ginger but not harsh enough to be refreshing.

Next, was the green tea.  It was like having a high quality green tea that was cold, only a bit sweet and, of course, creamy.   Okay, I have to insert that I later topped a Fairytale Brownie with this.  If you think it odd, you have not tasted a chocolate truffle that has a green tea center.

Red Bean has never been a favorite.   Obvious to me is that the one’s I’ve had at Japanese restaurants are not of the high quality ilk.  This one didn’t seem to be “grainy” and one I would either need to develop a taste for or decide what it paired with.  The ginger works so well with a chicken or fish meal.

I called the company to request an interview on my internet radio show with Vice President, Michael Emanuele.  Mr Green Tea, not a “scoop shop”, which begat in Brooklyn, has been in this business for 50 years. Who knew? The products, in more high end restaurants, recently expanded to groceries in the tri-state area.

It looks as if there is a fourth flavor, Chai Latte.   Had to try it and made sure to be available for the UPS person.   WOW!  This one is the exception to the five ingredients due to the chai spices of: ginger, cinnamon, black tea, black pepper, allspice, nutmeg, cardamom and cloves.   I found the spices to be blended in a way of “enhancement” without any of them being overpowering.   More of a refreshing dessert than a palate cleanser.   I’d take it over eggnog any day!  Far cry from the years of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.  www.mrgreenteaicecream.com

SEVEN FISHES WITHOUT AN ALLERGIC REACTION

The below article appeared in the December 20, 2013 issue of the Times Ledger. However, the person editing failed to mention the subject of the article leaving out two important paragraphs.  Omitting them sounds as if I don't know what I'm talking about.

The Feast of the Seven Fishes (festa dei sette pesci), celebrated on Christmas Eve, also known as The Vigil (La Vigilia), is believed to have originated in Southern Italy and is not a known tradition in many parts of Italy. The long tradition of eating seafood on Christmas Eve dates from the Roman Catholic tradition of abstinence which, in this case, meant refraining from the consumption of meat or milk products on the eve of specific holy days.  As no meat or butter could be used on such days, observant Catholics would instead eat fish, typically fried in oil.

Some Italian American families have been known to celebrate with 9, 11 or 13 different seafood dishes.  At Fairway Market in Douglaston you will most likely view a sign reading, “Festa deiSette Pesci” with a list of seven suggestions: Baccala (Dried Cod) Fritte; Fried or Boiled Calamari; Baked Flounder; Boiled Whole Crab or Lobster; Sauteed Shrimp; Steamed Mussels; A Classic Spaghetti with Clams.

An availability of fresh seafood is not a problem, but what if some of your family members have an allergy toward shellfish?  What is “out” and what is “in”?

The obvious “villains” are crustaceans such as: lobster, crabs, shrimp, prawns and crayfish.  You can most likely add mollusks such as clams, oysters, mussels, conch (scungilli) and scallops.  Not so obvious are squid (calamari) and octopus (polpo). What’s a host to do?

You can certainly find some fish markets in Queens.   I recommend Fairway Market not only for their array and reputation but noticing that there is a purposely placed separation between the allergens and non-allergens.   Make it a point to tell the person handling the seafood that you are purchasing fish for someone who is highly allergic to shellfish.  If necessary, request that the gloves be changed.

Another option is that if you are just purchasing the non-allergens, you might want to shop at a kosher supermarket such as Aron’s Kissena Farms, 75-15 Kissena Blvd.  or Seasons, 68-18 Main St.  Any form of shellfish considered to be un-kosher.

The rest of your basic Fairway shopping needs is available as well.  A preparation of a marina sauce using San Marzano tomatoes, a fish stock made with the fish bones and heads, fine quality pasta, olive oil, and produce such as lemons, garlic, onions, potatoes, parsley and basil are just some of the essentials.

Here is my idea for 10 fish dishes.  1.  Fresh sardines are offered.   Remove the head, tail and back bones.  Drench in flour and fry.   2.  and 3. Baked flounder filets and pan fried lemon sole filets are fabulous.   4. Bronzino is one of the best for stuffing.  Buy it whole and have them scale, gut and remove the head and tail (Keep for the stock).   5. and 6. You can make great tasting fish balls from cod and salmon.  Have them remove the salmon skin (stock) and grind the two fish adding mayo, Dijon mustard and Panko bread crumbs.  Roll in small balls and fry.  Use the fish balls in a pasta dish.   7. Fish and chips anyone?   Whole red snappers are on display.  They can do the fileting and you can keep…you know.   8.  A different pasta dish using anchovy filets.  9. Grill or pan fry fresh tuna for an Italian style tuna salad. The fish stock will come in handy for sauces as well as a 10. Christmas Fish Soup.

Nobody says that you have to stick to everything done Italian style.  Spruce it up with some smoked white fish and pickled herring for appetizers. I guess that makes 12.  Mangia!

BUYER BEWARE!

I recently placed an order through Amazon.com.  The next day I received 3 emails regarding “my order number”, each a different one.  I did open the mail and it gave instructions via an attachment.  I did not open that in case of a virus.  I did look at my Amazon account and looked up the order numbers to find that there was nothing associated with them…not that I expected that there was.   WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE PRIVACY AGREEMENT?

I called customer service and got someone in Texas.   One thing that I learned (amongst others) from taking EST (Erhard Seminars Training) is that I should not complain to anyone who can’t do something about it.  I requested the phone number to the Corporate Office.   She kept placing me on hold and asking “the team leader” questions via email.  I could not comprehend how someone is working at a job where they have no idea how to get in touch with the corporate office other than the willingness to give me an address.  The conversation is now 50 minutes long when I am finally connected to “the team leader”.  That conversation lasts 2 minutes and I am hung up on.

Thank goodness for search engines.   I easily find the location and phone number of 206-266-1000 and connect.   The person tells me that this seems to be happening lately and has “no connection with Amazon”.   Did I forget to say that I got 2 more of these emails the next day?   Considering that one of the pieces of information given to Amazon is my email address there seems to be a coincidence…no?

I did request compensation for all of the aggravation and did get something.   I am persistent!   What you first say is, “What are you willing to do to keep me as a customer?” A company may either make an offer or ask you.   When I spoke to a person in Texas, they offered to give me a credit of what I just purchased toward my next purchase.   “After this occurrence, why would I want to make a future purchase?”   This is what finally brought me to seeking out the company’s phone number.
Another coincidence…no more false emails!  Who are they selling the list to?
