CHANGE YOUR DIET RATHER THAN GO ON ONE

“It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life. Feeling good.”   How about a change in your diet for the new year by eating healthier food?  Try going organic for a month or two.   I’m sure there is something you can give up for the extra expense.

I tend to attach the word “organic” to fresh fruits and vegetables of which is prominent at Fairway Market.  Yes, I was off to the Douglaston store to shop and certainly got in my walking for the day as the organic is not restricted to any one aisle.   There are areas as well as shelves that will have an item that comes in both organic and non-organic such as meats and olive oil (which there is a whole lot of).

Aisles six and seven are a great start.   Juices, for instance, can be found in two areas, one of which is organic.  Lakewood has a good variety including a pure tart cherry and a super veggie.  Bionature drew me to Peach Nectar that also contained apple juice as a sweetener.   Keep in mind that juices contain a great deal of sugar and less fiber than eating a whole fruit.  That is why there are “juice glasses”.  Add some fruit juice to rooibos tea.

Since many of us think of juice as part of breakfast, let’s hop over to the organic sections of cereal.   For me, winter means “hot cereal” and I don’t like the instant ilk.   Arrowhead Mills has a seven grain with “high fiber.”  I put salt, butter and a bit of milk in mine, while many people like it sweet.   You can get Brad’s organic maple syrup.

There are a number of brands of organic “cold” cereals to choose from.  I personally prefer Nature’s Path and do not check the sugar content.  I use a “cereal bowl”.   My favorite is one with flax seed and red berries…to add Fairway’s organic milk.  That brings me over to the organic area of the dairy aisle which also has organic and vegan frozen foods.

An advantage to buying frozen vs fresh produce is being able to portion it out as you eat it and no waste.  Learning how to freeze “fresh” can also be helpful.  Fresh produce should be blanched and dried.  I like to portion out all of my foods by first wrapping in freezer paper or plastic wrap and then placing them in a freezer bag.   You can wash out the freezer bags as well.

Woodstock is a good brand for both frozen veggies and fruits, along with at least three more brands. I bought the asparagus as that is one fresh vegetable that goes bad before I can eat all of it.  Compare the brands, compare the prices.

You will rarely if never see a frozen dinner in my freezer.   I have the time, energy and just about every “cooking thing”, including both a NuWave oven and NuWave Precision Indoor Cooktop.   Besides, have you ever looked at the additives and preservatives in these?   I decided on some both for being “ethnic” and using organic produce.

One brand is actually called Ethnic Gourmet.  Artisan Bistro and Amy’s were two others that interested me.  No “a and p”. Calorie count was pretty low on all and portion size was enough to not overdo.   Although one brand did have something with shrimp, chicken seemed to be the only other protein used in these.   I’m guessing that if beef or pork is used then so would preservatives.   Lots of vegan options as well.

One essential for cooking is broth.   For some reason chicken broth is the most used in cooking, even if you are not preparing fowl.  Brads has an organic without fat.

Gotta have dessert.  Chatfield cocoa powder is just that.  It is not processed with alkali to modify the color and give a milder taste.   Flavorganics extracts had an almond that uses organic alcohol as well.   Rapunzel organic corn starch.  Fairway organic milk.   Organic sugar.  Combine cocoa powder, sugar, milk and extract in a pot.  Cook and stir.  While it’s cooking make a mixture of corn starch and cold water to make a paste.   Stir into mixture when the liquid is hot to thicken it.   The result is a chocolate-almond pudding.

One area had organic dried fruit.   What is the difference between plums and prunes?  Nothing, really.  They changed the name to appeal to a younger group that associates prunes with elderly constipation.   I found Made In Nature to have both no added sugar or sulfates.

After obtaining these items I decided to check out the pet food aisles of which one area had the “special” cat foods.   I wondered if my finicky cats would even care about their food being organic.  Newmans  (Paul is actually a relative of mine) and Castor were two of the brands.   So far my cats do appreciate it.  Then again, I can put just about any cat food in front of them and they will gobble it up.   I’ll stick to my own diet change for now.

As for the word’s to the song in the beginning…the song is entitled “Feeling Good” from the Broadway show The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd”.

YET ANOTHER DIET

I'm determined to lose weight and found a regiment called Personal Trainer Food.  Meals are cooked and frozen but rather then coming in boxes, come in bags that you can microwave.  I will be doing this for the next 28 days.  From a list of proteins (beef and chicken) I choose lunch and dinner.  I then select a vegetable package to have with the protein.  I'm also choosing breakfast of which an egg is included and then there are snacks, mostly nuts.  Otherwise there is a piece of cheese or "jerky" type but not as chewy.

I am eliminating sugar and food that turns to sugar.  We'll see how this goes!

In the meantime I had a Western Omelet and sausage patty for breakfast and some grilled chicken with a combo of veggies for lunch.  I eat slow and found that I was full.  I did have my two snacks of which I put the cheese in a salad.  I don't have to have salad, but want it.

I will report on my progress once a week.

A 21-DAY CHALLENGE

One of the products that I came across at the Go Green Expo was a drink called, Cell-nique. Nourish. Cleanse. Alkalinize. Live consciously. These drinks contains 31 different veggies/fruits. Now I know that V-8 and a few other have come out with veggie juices with add fruit or the other way around. So, what make this different? All of the ingredients are organic and instead of sugar they use agauve, which is not a sugar substitute like that stuff they are getting from plants that look like sugar. They come in flavors like: apple, tropical fruit, vanilla citrus, pomegranate, and kukicha tea. As for taste...I'd say that they are pretty good! Great served cold. A bit fibrous...but who cares?

So, what's this 21-day challenge about? I am going to drink a 12-oz bottle per day and see the results. Not only should it help cleanse my system, but give me energy and curb my appetite as well. April 24th is day one.

Nutrisystem Update

Nutrisystem update. Got pretty difficult due to the loss of my beloved cat. Depression can interfere with weight loss. No, I didn’t gain weight. I do find that eating out is quite hard as I don’t seem to choose the correct things. I went to a New York Sharks practice and wound up with a small roast beef sandwich with little mayo. Enough to hold me over until dinner time. However, after the Expo I went to dine with some of the Sharks as they are supportive of the GLBT community. We ate at Hot Wings and that’s what I ate!!! Mild, but full of calories. When I got home I had a salad.

It appears that Nutrisystem has a lot of new items. Dinners: chicken with almonds, rice and veggies; chicken pasta parm; lemon butter sauce with chicken; past primavera with tofu; teriyaki beef; sweet and sour chicken; turkey tetrazinni; beef tacos; chicken breast patty; grilled chicken breast and cheese spinach ravioli with meat. Desserts: mint chocolate crunch bar and chocolate crunch bar are not like the “supplement” bars but a real chocolate bar; golden pound cake; chocolate pound cake; cheese puffs; and microwave chocolate cake. The last will be interesting as I don’t have a microwave. I’m going to check out the chicken with almonds, etc and the chocolate pound cake. This chicken dinner was one of their best tasting and the pound cake was just sweet and chocolatey enough. Tonight I had the lemon butter sauce with chicken. Another great one.

Now...here came a test. How do I prepare the microwavable chocolate cake without a microwave? I did it in my NuWave oven. I kept it in for a bit too long and was not the best tasting. I prefer the pound cake to this one.

Nutrisystem Update

I'm losing it, I guess. Like to share a recent experience. I had a dinner that was just awful! Zesty Canjun Style Chicken with Sausage. It didn't taste bad going down, but not only did I have this really bad aftertaste, but I was feeling a bit nauseous the rest of the evening. Brushing my teeth and tongue didn't help and the gas was so bad that I had to leave the room after the omission. Funny how it doesn't bother ones cat or dog, huh? I called Nutrisystem. Since this was the first time with an order, I didn't choose the items and of course wouldn't know how they tasted, etc.

I was interested in seeing if I would be able to return items and exchange. So, here was the deal. No problem. I told them what I would be returning and chose want I wanted instead. I am to pack the returns in a box and send it to them to include the exchange number and later to call in the tracking number. I am to pay for the shipping to them, but they will ship the exchanges with no charge. Now, I know for the next time.

The Weight Is Over

Nutrisystem: The Weight Is Over. I mean...I'm overweight. And now for a Nutrisystem update. My scale is off. No, it’s not an excuse. I’m not sure as to what I first weighed. I’m just going to go along with what it says that I began with. Food is still fine. I did lose some weight. Getting into the exercise via the DVD tape and/or treadmill and drinking lots of water. Had steak and potato dinner along with a salad. Checked out ingredients for a fat free dressing. Bought rice vinegar and using cilantro and arugula for added flavor. Sweetening with a bit of that new sugar substitute PurVia.

You've heard about Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon? Well now you can go to www.oracleofbacon.org and do one linking my name to another movie actor. Just getting ready to start the Nutrisystem livit. You'll soon be seeing a youtube of me of my "before" stage. I'm hopping on the scale tomorrow. Having my last Fairytale Brownie for a long while. Went off to a restaurant, Mama Meena's Family Restaurant for Filipino food. Had chicken soup, grill skewer of chicken and a veggie dish that had long beans, squash and coconut milk. It will be quite a long time before I eat this one....but it was soooooo good. You'll be seeing youtube on this place pretty soon.
