Power Drive: Rookie wide receiver Maggie Natell scores the Sharks’ first touchdown against the Wreckers in their first home game of the season at Aviator Sports Complex

Opening day was a feeding frenzy for the New York Sharks — the city’s professional women’s tackle football team — who chewed up the visiting Connecticut Wreckers 50–0 in the team’s first home game at Aviator Sports Complex last Saturday.

The shutout vindicated quarterback Karen “Mulli” Mulligan’s confidence in her team.
“We went down to Baltimore last week for some scrimmages with other teams and I think our team is well prepared,” said Mulligan. “I’m excited for our players.”

Shortly after former New York Liberty player Kym Hampton sang the National Anthem and performed the coin toss, Mulligan chummed the waters with a 10-yard pass to rookie wide receiver Maggie Natell who ran it in for the touchdown. It was not only the Sharks’ first touchdown of the season, but Natell’s first touchdown — ever.

“This was my first experience with football,” Natell said. “It was a short pass but I had to break a tackle to get into the end zone.”

Like many of her teammates, she grew up playing a variety of team sports, but the Sharks offered Natell her first opportunity to play tackle football.
After that, the Sharks’ defense matched the tone of the offense, and didn’t allow the Wreckers to get anything going.

The Sharks were up 16–0 in the first quarter with their first three possessions before the Wreckers had a chance to significantly move the ball. Wide receiver Rookie Alana Casner answered by scoring the second touchdown off a 39-yard pass from Mulligan.

In the second quarter, it was another pass to Casner for her second touchdown of the game, and a long pass to rookie wide receiver Brilynn Fields, who caught the ball on a six-yard pass, running 58 yards for another Sharks touchdown.

The Sharks had 36 points by the second half, which Mulligan started off with another touchdown pass to Casner.“I had three passes and three touchdowns, totaling 107 yards,” said Casner. “It was exhilarating running into the end zone knowing that I scored — the first one being the best.”
The Wreckers did take advantage of some Sharks mistakes in the second half, gaining some momentum on yardage, but it never translated to scoring.

A touch pass to wide receiver and safety Krystal Molina and a 12-yard run by rookie running back Gina Pettigano closed out the scoring.

“I guess it paid off with the coaches teaching all pre-season,” said rookie outside linebacker Amber Terrell, who also got her first game experience on Saturday. “It felt great to tackle someone other than my teammate. The ball came my way often enough to get a lot of opportunities to show off what I’ve been taught.”

The Sharks’ second home game at Floyd Bennett Field at Aviator Sports Complex is April 26, at 7:30 pm against the Pittsburgh Passion.

NEW YORK SHARKS ARE NOW 5-0

The New York Sharks women's pro football team took their fifth win with a score of 12-8 against the Pittsburgh Passion on Saturday, May 8th. Adrienne Smith scored the first TD with a stretch of the hand and Chante Bonds ran in for the second TD.

I got Andra Douglas one of those wine caddys from www.winecaddys.com This was special. The caddy is of a quarterback player. Andra, who's the owner of the New York Sharks, played quarterback on the team. She placed a special bottle into it before taking photos.

NEW YORK SHARKS GAME

The New York Sharks women's pro football team took their third game against the Connecticut Crusher's at a score of 65-14, making their season so far 3-0. Shannon Wentworth, CEO of Sweet women's travel, was onhand to perform the coin toss. Prior to the game Shannon was with a group of women doing a cleanup at the park located at Floyd Bennett Field.

You will notice a photo of Shannon, myself and Andra being taken just as a Sharks play was happening.

NEW YORK SHARKS

Home opener of the New York Sharks! We played against the D.C. Divas and took it 19-13. That's 2-0! It was an edge of the seat game for sure. Down to the wire it was a matter of their dropping the ball near the goal line with only seconds to go. We took the ball and took a knee. Samantha Rapoport from the NFL was on hand to do the coin toss. Samantha is doing her utmost to get girls flag football into the NYC schools.

New York Sharks Bite Bank of Hollywood

Adrienne Smith, Leeann Brzozowski, and Melodie Abrook, three players from the New York Sharks, women’s professional football team, entered the world of celebrity money handouts and were granted the $65,000 that they asked for.

It was the new Ryan Seacrest-produced E! reality show, Bank of Hollywood, that pinned them up against “ bankers” Sean Patterson, Vanessa Rousso, Melody Thornton and Candy Spelling. The Sharks requested funding for their training and competing in the first ever International Women’s tackle Football Tournament to be held in Stockholm, Sweden in June, 2010.

How did this all come about? “I received an email in September regarding something referred to as ‘your dream’”, said Adrienne. “My job entails Marketing and got in touch with a few of the players to get their opinion on whether this would be something that would work for the team. With a positive reply, I filled out the application, which I was to bring with me to a casting call in New York City. Both Leanne and Melodie were behind me and available. We showed up dressed in full gear.

I got a callback for round two, in which they videotaped us asking for the money. The producer must have been impressed as I kept receiving calls and paperwork. They requested our appearance in Hollywood.”

Andra Douglas, owner of the New York Sharks, flew out with them, where two of the producers met with her after deciding on what day the shoot would occur.

“After we arrived,” Adrienne continued, “they took us to the studio for a rehearsal. That’s when we learned who the judges were, although we never made contact with them until that actual day of the shoot.”

The contestants are kept separated and the producers provide many rehearsals as Adrienne, the main spokesperson, represented the three. “We waited in the ‘green room’ hearing the live audience ‘cheering’ or ‘booing’. I can’t begin to tell you how nervous we were.”

At first, the audience and judges see three what appear to be male football players. We had our hair totally tucked into our helmets. When we removed them, there were cheers as the audience reacted to our being females.”

While we were making our appeal, there was footage of our team playing in the background. It took three of the four judges to say, ‘yes’!”

What does it mean for the New York Sharks? The competition involves both the Independent Women’s Football League, (www.iwflsports.com) and USA Football (www.usafootball.com) for which the $65,000 will help fund the New York Sharks’ participation in the tournament.
“It doesn’t guarantee that the three of us will play”, said Adrienne, “as there are coaches from both the IWFL and USA Football selecting the qualified players.” Team USA players will be selected from the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL), which consists of more than 1,800 female athletes on 51 teams across North America. According to the IWFL website, the player roster will be announced by Feb. 1, 2010.
